Pain with sexual
relations that has persisted for more than six months can be a sign of
endometriosis. This disease can cause pelvic pain, irregular
bleeding, and severe internal scarring. Many women with untreated
endometriosis develop infertility and the need for a hysterectomy.
Early treatment can often protect a woman's ability to have children
and prevent the need for hysterectomy. Early treatment includes oral
contraceptive pills and anti-inflammatory medications like Motrin,
Aleve, or Advil. If these medicines don't stop the pain then a simple,
outpatient procedure called laparoscopy (band-aid surgery) can often
remove the active disease, eliminate the pain, and protect a woman's
ability to have children.
