Pain with intercourse can be vaginal or
pelvic. Vaginal pain can be caused by dryness, mechanical injury,
infection, herpes, hormonal disturbances, and emotional problems. Vaginal
pain should be addressed by a local gynecologist.
Pain in the belly with
intercourse can be caused by such conditions as endometriosis, ovarian
cysts, adhesions (internal scarring), and infection.
The medical term for
painful sex is dyspareunia. Dyspareunia can significantly impair a woman=s
sexuality and destroy important relationships. If dyspareunia lasts for
six months or more and is not relieved by oral contraception,
non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, or antibiotics then a
significant disease process such as endometriosis must be suspected.
Early diagnosis and
treatment of endometriosis can often eliminate the pain, prevent major
surgery, and protect a woman's fertility. Other causes of chronic
dyspareunia, such as adhesions (internal scarring), ovarian cysts, and
infection can be treated effectively as well.
